James de Vries

Creative Director Harvard Business Review Group, Owner Creative Director of de Luxe & Associates.

James graduated from Sydney College of the Arts with the SCA Council Award for academic achievement in design. He worked as a designer, illustrator and art director until starting de Luxe & Associates in 1993. de Luxe was built on the belief that visual communication and story-telling combine as a powerful language in our culture.
de Luxe rapidly developed a leading specialty in editorial communication, with projects that included significant typographic, design and organizational change for clients that include The Belvoir Street Theatre, Fairfax Media, News Magazines, The South China Morning Post, Indonesia’s Globe Media, The New Zealand Herald, Monash Graduate School of Business and Westpac Private Bank.
In more recent years, James has broadened de Luxe into collaborative company consultancy, advocating for the power of design to shape behaviour and cultures.
After de Luxe beat out the competition to redesign Harvard Business Review in 2009, James has built on the successful results of the project and moved to the USA to take on the role of Creative Director of the Harvard Business Review Group. With a mandate to develop the HBR brand across all media.
James continues to write on design and guest-lecture at Sydney’s University of Technology and other design schools. de Luxe’s projects win recognition in Australia, Asia and the United States. James regularly judges design competitions and portfolios across Australasia.
